Every year, hundreds of foxes face situations they cannot escape alone.
For one curious little cub, that danger came in the form of a sewer drain. We named him Gully. We received a call about a young fox cub that had somehow become trapped deep inside a roadside sewer drain. Exactly how he ended up there, we’ll never know. Like all fox cubs, Gully was naturally curious. As youngsters begin exploring beyond the safety of the den, they investigate everything around them. Unfortunately, our towns and cities are full of hazards they simply don’t understand.
Open drains, steep gullies, fencing, netting, discarded rubbish and busy roads can all become life-threatening obstacles for an inquisitive cub. By the time Gully was rescued, he was cold, exhausted and understandably frightened.
We also had no way of knowing how long he had been trapped.
Safe at Last
Once safely in our care, Gully was carefully examined at our vet practice.
Thankfully, he hadn’t suffered any major injuries, but he was weak, chilled and in shock after his ordeal.
The priority was simple: warmth, hydration, nutritious food and plenty of quiet time to recover… and then a much needed bath.
As the hours passed, Gully slowly began to regain his strength. The frightened little cub that had arrived from beneath the streets gradually started showing the confidence and curiosity that every healthy fox cub should have.
A Happy Ending
After receiving the care he needed and spending time growing stronger, Gully was able to continue his journey exactly as every fox cub should.
His story serves as an important reminder that small acts can make an enormous difference.
If you ever hear unusual cries coming from a drain, inspect a deep gully where a cub cannot climb out, or discover a young fox trapped somewhere it cannot escape, please don’t ignore it.
One phone call could save a life. Rescues like Gully’s are only possible because of the kindness of those who stop to help and the generosity of our supporters.
