Flatey’s Story: A Face Worth Fighting For

Flatty-2
When you're living wild, even a small injury can quickly become life-threatening. For Flatey, the damage was impossible to ignore.

Named by the young people who helped rescue him, this handsome fox was spotted with a serious injury to the right-hand side of his mouth. Some of his teeth were exposed, the wound was raw and fleshy, and from the smell alone it was clear the injury had become badly infected.

Every day he remained out there meant more pain, more infection and less chance of recovery.

Thankfully, concerned members of the public raised the alarm, and Flatey was safely caught in a humane cage trap before being rushed straight to the vets.

The veterinary team decided to keep him in overnight so they could thoroughly assess his injuries and make him as comfortable as possible. He was started on antibiotics to tackle the infection and given pain relief to help ease what must have been considerable discomfort.

The following day, Flatey was well enough to return to our care, where he is now being closely monitored while he continues his recovery.

Unfortunately, his treatment isn’t over just yet.

The injury has left several of his molars exposed, and these will need to be surgically removed during another visit to the vets. While this means more treatment lies ahead, we’re hopeful that once the damaged teeth are removed, Flatey can finally begin to heal properly.

For now, though, he’s exactly where he needs to be.

Safe. Comfortable. Well fed.

And surrounded by people determined to give him every chance of returning to the wild where he belongs.
Sadly, cases like Flatey’s are becoming all too familiar. Every week we receive calls about foxes suffering from injuries, disease and neglect, many requiring urgent veterinary treatment before they have any chance of survival.

It’s only thanks to the kindness of our supporters that we’re able to answer those calls, provide emergency veterinary care and give foxes like Flatey the second chance they deserve.

We’ll continue to keep you updated as Flatey’s recovery progresses. Thank you for helping make stories like his possible.
